Inquiry Based Learning

Inquiry implies a 'need or want to know'.  Inquiry is not so much seeking the right answer - because often there is none - but rather seeking appropriate resolutions.

The inquiry approach to learning is based on the belief that students are powerful learners who must be actively engaged in the process of investigating, processing, organising, synthesising, refining and extending their knowledge within a topic.

As part of our efforts to ensure that your child gets the best possible education, at SJV we deliver the MAPPEN Curriculum.  MAPPEN is a sequenced guided inquiry curriculum designed by Australian educators which is currently implemented in over 200 Australian schools.

MAPPEN provides opportunities for students to explore content and skills through real world examples and represents approxiamtely three hours of teaching time each week which is integrated mainly in English, Humanity & Social Sciences and Science, but also can be found in other core defined curriculum.  Each term SJV deliver an eight week learning sequence which is designed around one of the following concepts:

  • Community
  • Creativity
  • Necessity
  • Social Justice
  • Sustainability
  • Identity
  • Curiosity
  • Change
